The Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) are a group of 25 engineering-based interdisciplinary technological research institutions established in India and focused on information technology knowledge creation. Five of them are established, financed, and managed by the Ministry of Education (MOE). The other 20 are based on the basic public-private partnership (PPP) model and are funded by the central government, state governments, and industry partners in the ratio of 50:35:15. Admissions to undergraduate programs in IIITs for 6,000 seats are held every year by admissions committees through the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JSAA) and JEE (Main).
IIITs offer B.Tech degrees in two programs - Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) and Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE). Both the B.Tech degrees are residential programs. Degree requirements will be specified in terms of minimum total credits to be earned as well as minimum credits to be earned in specific areas. Key features of the credit system include a process of continuous assessment of student performance, the absence of a pass or fail on an annual or semester basis, and the flexibility to allow students to progress at a pace tailored to individual ability and comfort, subject to credit regulations and prerequisite requirements.
IIITs offer undergraduate programs focused on Information Technology – B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering (250 seats) and B.Tech in Electronics and Communication Engineering (88 seats). They follow the reservation of Central Educational Institutions under the Admissions Act, of 2006. Admission is based on the Common Entrance Examination, JEE (Main). B.Tech admissions to CSE and ECE programs are done through JoSAA. Based on merit ranking i.e. All India Ranking (AIR) in JEE (Main), Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) or Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) invites candidates for an online counseling session to select the institute of their choice.
The main goal of B.Tech program at IIIT is to prepare budding students who have the potential to face challenges with industry-ready standards. The unique curriculum offered facilitates students to become top engineers/entrepreneurs while equipping them for higher studies and research work. The curriculum at IIIT emphasizes Outcome Based Education (OBE) and follows a student-centered teaching and learning methodology to help students achieve well-defined goals after completing the courses. They give enough opportunities to learn both the basics of the theory and its application aspects. The curriculum is designed around concepts that are driven by real-world practice. The second half is engaging in that it provides pathways for developing specialist skills and acquiring knowledge in different sub-areas. It also provides a practical approach through well-led project work to suit individual students.
Apart from well-designed core subjects, mathematics, science, humanities, and skill-building programs are an integral and interesting part of the distinctive curriculum. Students are encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities and community service throughout their undergraduate program. They offer a friendly and pleasant living environment that presents the right atmosphere for exploring academic and non-academic interests.
The curriculum has two definitive features that distinguish it from other institutes.
• A Track on Full Stack Development (FSD): The Full Stack Development track focuses on producing graduates with industry-ready software development skills. This industry-focused FSD track consists of three courses delivered in a sequence where students learn and demonstrate the latest technologies, tools, and libraries used in their work situations.
• B.Tech specialization: IIIT offers B.Tech students a chance to specialize in one of the trending areas of Computer Science and Engineering. CSE students can specialize in any of the following areas:
1. Artificial intelligence and machine learning
2. Cyber security
3. Data Science
